Favorite People #008: Charley Harper

Monday, February 15th, 2010

I actually found out about Charley Harper one weekend when I was home in Madison visiting my Mom. As usual, she turns on Sunday Morning while she drinks her tea. But on this certain Sunday (not only was I awake), there was a segment about Todd Oldham and his unique relationship with American Modernist Charley Harper (and promoting his book Charley Harper: An Illustrated Life). And from then on, I fell in love with Mr. Harper’s work. His self-proclaimed “minimal realism” style is so iconic, geometric and sweet. The fact that he illustrated and screen-printed his works, he is not only one of my favorite people but a new-found graphic hero.

Todd Oldham’s pricey book is on my “to buy” list, but until then I’ll just continue to drool over this website.

Just when you think things are bad, something unexpected and extremely awesome happens.

OK. So, I’ll admit it. I sent a big ol’ box of Too Many Suitors merch to the Flight of the Conchords. And every once and a while I check Flickr to see if I can find one of them wearing one of my shirts. And although that has yet to happen… I did find one of my shirts onstage with Bret and Jemaine during their recent tour stop in Philadelphia! *I’m shocked and amazed!!!* Nigel Collins of the Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra rocked my Lady Owl shirt! See the proof below! Exclamation!!!! Isn’t life wonderful?!?

A little peek of a familiar shirt. Nigel seems happy to be wearing it, Jemaine seems smitten.

Wha, wha?!?! That is my shirt!

“Why yes, I do look sharp.”

“Your beard looks good, but your shirt looks better.” (At least that’s what I imagined Jemaine saying)

The Great Andrew Bird

Saw Andrew Bird at the State Theatre last saturday and fell in love! I mean, I loved his music before, but his stage presence and insane musical talent has made me smitten with Mr. Bird. Check him out, you won’t be disappointed!

OMFG I love Arj Barker

and apparently he loves my shirts! Well, ok, I sent him some Too Many Suitors shirts, but to actually see pictures of him wearing them is a dream come true. I got my first celebrity endorsement! Thank you Flickr and a special thanks to Arj!

Favorite People #007: Kermit the Frog

Thursday, November 6th, 2008

I was a lucky child to grow up with the wonder of Jim Henson and his Muppets. What’s more magical than puppets, music, silliness and guest stars?

As to Kermie, he was my favorite. He’s sensitive, reasonable and dreamy.

Favorite People #006: Barack Obama

Wednesday, November 5th, 2008

I have never been more excited or optimistic for the future of our country. History has been made and Change has come to America. Finally, a president who spreads hope and not fear. Congratulations, President-Elect Obama and Vice-President Elect Joe Biden!

Yes We Can!

Favorite People #005: Martha Stewart

Monday, October 13th, 2008

Yeah, that’s right, say what you will about her, but gosh darn, I really admire this woman. She’s got talent, dedication, passion, creativity and determination — and with that she’s built an empire. My mom says I’m like a younger, hipper version of Martha Stewart. And I totally agree! Here are a few examples of why I love the Martha Stewart creative dynasty:

Favorite People #004: David Weidman

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

I came across David Weidman when I did an online search of his name from a screen-printed art print that I seem to have forgotten how I came in possession of. I remember admiring his print and thinking I should google his name. What I discovered was that Weidman was a hot commodity in advertising and animation in the 50s and 60s. He also produced a series of illustrated screen-prints during that time that are still for sale on his website today. And as a graphic designer myself, I had to order his “work smarter not harder” print.  It was a lovely transaction and even got a little thank you note from David personally!

I wish I could find more of his work online and at a higher quality, but this was the best I could do. It’s still totally inspiring:

I want that flower forms print! Absolutely beautiful. Just like your face.

Favorite People #003: The Pressure

Monday, August 25th, 2008

The Pressure is the multi-disciplinary brain child of Adam R. Garcia. I met Adam while in art school and have been inspired/delighted by his work ever since. He’s a designer, illustrator, art director, intellect, rapper and aspiring ping-pong player. His website shows how faceted this kid really is. He’s definitely bookmark-able.

Below are some note doodles that were passed in one of our classes we had together back in the day. Yes, I’ve kept them. They are Adam Garcia originals. Yes, I’m one of those designers that keep (hoard) everything. And yes, I’m hoping to put them on ebay one day. We’ll see what happens.

Favorite People #002: Kelly English

Monday, August 18th, 2008

Let me introduce you to the lovely, the talented, Ms. Kelly English. Kelly is an extremely gifted designer/art director with an impressive background. She lives and works in Minneapolis, with former positions at Graphiculture and Planet Propaganda. I love her girly, playful and sophisticated aesthetic! It really is inspiring to see a woman design work that is strong yet still feminine. And best of all, I am lucky to call her my friend! Below is just a sampling of her work.
